Five reasons you should be using Lactic Acid

Lactic Acid isn’t the kind of ingredient that tends to steal the spotlight.

It doesn’t have the marketing draw of some newer actives, and it’s been around long enough that it’s easy to take for granted. But spend any time formulating across cleaning, skincare or food and beverage applications and you’ll keep coming across it, because it genuinely earns its place in a formulation rather than just sounding good on a label.

Part of what makes it so enduring is that it’s not a one-trick ingredient. It descales, exfoliates, preserves and hydrates. And it does each of those things with a safety and sustainability profile that’s becoming harder to ignore as regulatory pressure and consumer expectations continue to rise. That combination of proven performance and favourable chemistry is exactly why formulators across very different industries keep reaching for it.

So, if you don’t already work with Lactic Acid, or you only use it in one context, here are five reasons why it deserves a closer look.

Reason 1: It’s a highly effective, eco-friendly descaler

Acidification is Lactic Acid’s main role in many homecare and I&I cleaning products, and it performs this role well. It breaks down limescale, mineral deposits and soap scum, making it a reliable active in toilet bowl cleaners, bathroom sprays, kettle descalers and hard surface cleaners.

Its environmental and safety profile sets it apart from stronger mineral acids like Hydrochloric or Phosphoric. Lactic Acid is readily biodegradable and has a comparatively low toxicity profile, which matters for regulatory compliance and for brands positioning their products as greener alternatives. Consumers and procurement managers in the I&I sector are increasingly scrutinising what goes into cleaning products, and Lactic Acid holds up well to that scrutiny.

It’s also less aggressive on the surfaces it cleans. You get effective descaling without the same risk of corrosion or surface damage that comes with harsher acid options, and it’s generally compatible with other cleaning actives, giving you good formulation flexibility.

Reason 2: It performs well at low concentrations

One of the most useful things about Lactic Acid in cleaning formulations is that you only need a small amount. At typical use levels (around 1% to 5%), you can achieve meaningful acidification and descaling performance, which has obvious cost-in-use advantages. This is particularly relevant when you’re formulating concentrates for the I&I market.

Lower use levels also simplify things from a handling and safety perspective. You’re working with a material that’s easier to classify and transport, and that tends to make life easier across the supply chain, from your own manufacturing environment through to your customers’ end use.

For retail homecare products, it also gives you room to keep your overall formulation mild enough for everyday consumer use without sacrificing performance where it counts.

Reason 3: It’s a gentler AHA that works across more skin types

Lactic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). So, it’s worth understanding how it behaves in skincare products, because it’s meaningfully different from other AHAs in ways that affect how you formulate with it.

It exfoliates by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells at the surface of the skin, rather than aggressively disrupting the deeper layers. More importantly, its molecular size is larger than Glycolic Acid’s, which means it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply or quickly. It results in a gentler exfoliating action that’s much better tolerated by sensitive, dry or compromised skin types, making it perfect for consumers who tend to avoid AHA products because they’re concerned about irritation.

This opens up your audience considerably. You can develop effective toners, serums, body lotions, masks and anti-ageing formulations that work for a broader range of skin types, without having to tier your product range around sensitivity in the same way you might with products that use Glycolic Acid. Lactic Acid also addresses multiple skin concerns in one. Texture, dullness, fine lines and uneven tone all respond well to regular use.

Reason 4: It helps skin hold on to moisture

Lactic Acid is a component of the skin’s natural moisturising factor (NMF), the complex mixture of compounds that helps skin maintain its own hydration. That biological familiarity means skin recognises and responds well to it, which is a significant advantage when you’re formulating leave-on skincare products.

On top of its exfoliating action, Lactic Acid also works as a humectant, helping the skin attract and retain water. This dual functionality is useful in formulation terms. With Glycolic Acid, you often need to compensate for the potential dryness that comes with strong exfoliation. Lactic Acid gives you the exfoliating benefit with built-in support for the skin barrier, which makes it well-suited to moisturisers, body lotions and overnight treatments where you want meaningful activity without leaving the user’s skin feeling stripped or tight.

Reason 5: It has a well-established role in food and beverage

Lactic Acid has been present in fermented foods for thousands of years. It’s what gives products like yoghurt, sourdough and kimchi their characteristic tang.

As a food ingredient, it’s produced through the fermentation of natural carbohydrates, which gives it strong clean-label credentials at a time when manufacturers are under real pressure to move away from synthetic additives.

In practical formulation terms, it serves several functions. As a pH regulator, it’s widely used in beverages, dairy products, confectionery and bakery products to adjust and stabilise acidity. As a preservative, its antimicrobial properties help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, which can prevent products from spoiling and extend their shelf life. It can also contribute to flavour, adding a mild, clean acidity that works well in a range of recipes.

Lactic Acid is approved for food use by the Food Standards Agency, the EFSA and the FDA. It carries E270 status in the UK and in Europe, so the regulatory pathway is well established. If you’re developing products for manufacturers who need a naturally derived acidulant or preservative with a clean safety record, it’s a strong starting point.
