What is Lactic Acid and what is it used for?

Lactic Acid shows up across a surprisingly broad range of product categories, from skincare serums to eco-friendly descalers and professional cleaning formulations. It’s also used as a natural preservative in many food and drink products.

For manufacturers, Lactic Acid’s versatility is part of what makes it worth understanding properly. The same ingredient behaves quite differently depending on its concentration, pH and the formulation it sits within, which means the case for using it looks different depending on your market.

So, what is Lactic Acid?

Lactic Acid is an organic acid that occurs naturally in the body and in fermented foods. It’s what gives yoghurt and sourdough their characteristic tang. For commercial use in cosmetics and cleaning products, it’s typically produced through the bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates, which makes it a naturally derived ingredient rather than a synthetic one.

Chemically, it belongs to a group of compounds called Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). You might already be familiar with that term from skincare, and we’ll get into what it means in practice shortly. But it’s worth flagging early on, because it’s central to understanding how Lactic Acid works on the skin. At different concentrations and pH levels, Lactic Acid behaves quite differently, which is a big part of why it’s useful in such varied applications.

Lactic acid in skincare and cosmetics

As an AHA, Lactic Acid works by targeting the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface of the skin. Over time, these cells can build up and make skin look dull, feel rough or contribute to uneven tone. Lactic acid loosens those bonds, allowing dead cells to shed and revealing the fresher skin underneath.

This process of chemical exfoliation is worth distinguishing from physical exfoliation, which involves scrubbing the skin with an abrasive. Chemical exfoliation tends to be more controlled and consistent, and for many skin types, it’s considerably gentler. Regular use can improve skin texture, brighten the complexion and reduce the appearance of fine lines and dark spots over time. It’s not an overnight fix, but used consistently, the results are well documented.

What sets Lactic Acid apart from many other AHAs is that it doesn’t just remove. It also hydrates. Lactic Acid is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture and helps the skin hold onto it. This dual action makes it useful in formulations aimed at people with drier or more reactive skin, where exfoliation alone could leave their skin feeling stripped or sensitised.

You’ll find Lactic Acid in a wide range of product formats for this reason. Serums, exfoliating toners, overnight masks and body lotions all benefit from an ingredient that can resurface and replenish at the same time.

How Lactic Acid compares to Glycolic Acid

If you work in cosmetic formulation or have spent any time researching AHAs, you’ll know that Glycolic Acid is the most widely used and talked-about member of the group. So it’s worth being clear about where Lactic Acid sits in relation to it.

Lactic Acid has larger molecules than Glycolic Acid, which means it penetrates the skin more slowly and less deeply. That makes it milder, so much less likely to cause redness, irritation or sensitivity, particularly in people with dry or reactive skin who might struggle with Glycolic Acid. If your brand develops products aimed at sensitive skin or is looking to offer an entry-level exfoliant, Lactic Acid is often the most appropriate starting point. It delivers real, measurable results without the same risk of irritation.

Lactic Acid in homecare and industrial cleaning

To understand Lactic Acid’s role in cleaning, it helps to know a little about why acidic ingredients are effective in the first place. Limescale, mineral deposits and soap scum are all alkaline. An acidic cleaning agent works by neutralising and dissolving these deposits.

The question for formulators is which acid to use, and at what concentration. Different acids bring different levels of effectiveness, safety profiles and environmental impact to the table.

Lactic Acid has carved out a solid position in homecare and I&I cleaning formulations as a mild, effective and biodegradable acidifier and descaler. You’ll find it in bathroom cleaners, limescale removers, toilet cleaners and multipurpose hard surface sprays, particularly those marketed with natural or eco-friendly credentials.

Lactic Acid is readily biodegradable and produced through natural fermentation, which gives it a better environmental profile than stronger mineral acids like Hydrochloric or Phosphoric Acid. It’s also safer to handle and less aggressive on surfaces, which matters for end users and for manufacturers thinking about safety and regulatory compliance.

For brands developing greener cleaning ranges, Lactic Acid offers something useful. It’s effective enough to do the job, without the environmental or safety trade-offs that come with harsher alternatives.

In industrial and institutional settings, such as commercial kitchens, hospitals, care homes and food processing facilities, the demands on cleaning products are more stringent. You need to offer products that deliver reliable, repeatable performance and meet strict safety and environmental standards. Lactic Acid features in many professional-grade cleaning formulations because it can deliver on both fronts.

Its relatively low toxicity makes it safer for the people using it. Its biodegradability supports compliance with increasingly demanding environmental regulations. And its descaling performance is sufficient for most routine applications.

It’s not the most powerful acid available, but for a wide range of professional cleaning tasks, it doesn’t need to be.

The same ingredient, very different jobs

Lactic Acid provides a good illustration of something that comes up often in specialist chemicals. The same molecule can serve very different purposes depending on the concentration it’s used at, the formulation it sits within and the application it’s designed for.

At low concentrations in a carefully balanced skincare serum, it helps to resurface and hydrate skin. At higher concentrations in cleaning products, it can dissolve limescale.

It’s also worth noting that lactic acid has a long history as a food preservative. It occurs naturally in fermented foods. Yoghurt, kefir and sourdough all contain it as a byproduct of the bacterial fermentation process, and that same antimicrobial action is put to work commercially to extend shelf life and control pH in a range of food and drink products. For manufacturers in the food and beverage sector, it’s a well-established, naturally derived preservative with clean label appeal that’s hard to argue with.
