Applications and Uses:
Unsaturated Polyester Resins are used extensively in FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) Composite applications such as boat building, Auto-Refinishing, architectural products, caravan building and panel manufacture for interior partition walls. Products can be manufactured using Hand Lay-up, Wet Spray, Vacuum Infusion or Resin Transfer. Further applications include Filament Winding, Pultrusion, Moulding or Casting. The strength of the cured resin has also led to Adhesive applications where it is used to lock studs etc into concrete in a similar way to Epoxy Resins.

What are Unsaturated Polyester Resins:
Polyester resins are synthetic reactive polymers, which can be reacted by adding a ‘catalyst’, usually a peroxide system such as MEKP or Benzoyl peroxide, to form a thermoset Plastic shape. The peroxide used initiates a strongly exothermic reaction and addition rates will have a significant impact on the performance of the finished polymer. Metal catalysts can also be added to further control reaction rates. Usually the resin is reinforced using glass fibres or similar to form extremely strong composites. Resins can be converted into SMC (Sheet Moulding Compounds) and BMC (Bulk Moulding Compounds) for moulding applications.
