Polyester Resins

Polyester resins are synthetic reactive polymers, which can be reacted by adding a ‘catalyst’, usually a peroxide system such as MEKP or Benzoyl peroxide, to form a thermoset Plastic shape. The peroxide used initiates a strongly exothermic reaction and addition rates will have a significant impact on the performance of the finished polymer. Quite often the resin is reinforced using glass fibres or similar to form extremely strong composites.

Applications and Uses:

Polyester resins are used extensively in FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) Composite applications such as boat building, Auto-Refinishing, caravan building and panel manufacture for interior partition walls. The strength of the cured resin has also led to Adhesive applications where it is used to lock studs etc into concrete in a similar way to Epoxy Resins.
