Iron Oxides

Iron is able to form a multitude of oxides, hydroxides and even oxide hydroxides, many of which we exploit for their various properties. From naturally occurring systems such as rust, iron ore or even haemoglobin to chemically reacted variants such as the many inorganic pigments that contain iron oxides. Two natural iron oxides commonly used as pigments are natural iron oxide (usually red in colour) and micaceous iron oxide (much darker in colour and mica like in structure).

Applications:

Iron oxide pigments vary in colour from yellows through to reds, browns and blacks and are used for colouring and tinting. Natural iron oxides find applications as colourants in Decorative and Industrial coatings, with the micaceous iron oxide offering significant corrosion protection. Other more unusual applications for natural iron oxides are as colourants in foods and in friction plates for automotive or Industrial use.
