Each year MegaChem (UK) Ltd adopts a single charity, with the intention of raising funds throughout the year in support of that charity. Back in January, we adopted Macmillan Cancer Support as our chosen charity for 2016 and made plans to raise as much money as possible by putting on special events. We had already run a couple of minor events this year, such as silly tie day and silly hat day, but on Friday 30th September we joined with many other people across the UK and held a formal Macmillan Coffee Morning.
Kitchens were put on alert and ovens fired up in anticipation. Cupboards were laid bare of ingredients and oven gloves were made ready for the baking event of the year. The sounds of the whisking and beating of ingredients along with cries of desperation would have been heard in so many homes across South Wales for the preceding evenings. No matter what anybody says, everyone wanted their offerings to be the best and it is fair to say that Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood would have been astounded by the range and quality of the creations we produced for this special event. There were cakes and buns of all descriptions, along with biscuits and scones and it is fair to say that there was not a soggy bottom in sight.
Despite having advertised the event for several weeks in the local area, we were still not sure just how successful the morning would be. A huge amount of preparation in the hours leading up to it ensured that we had a beautiful display on the centre table and ample supply of tea, coffee and hot chocolate to aid digestion of the huge range of bakes. More importantly, employees of local companies, friends and families, young and old alike joined us for the event and we have to say a big thank you to everyone who either baked or attended and played their part in helping us to raise over £176. While everybody in the business played an active part in this, a special mention must be made to Katie Mayo, who organised the event and to Cheryl Murdoch, who was given the accolade of star baker for her very impressive Death by Chocolate heart shaped cake.
While we were thoroughly amazed at our own success on the sales side, we were still left with more calories than are good for a chemical distribution company on a Friday afternoon. Luckily, we found the strength deep within us to clear the fresh cream items and the rest were packed away for consumption through the following week. The result of this impressive intake of carbohydrates and fats must surely now mean that either a sponsored walk or sponsored diet must now be on the horizon. Watch this space!
Giving back is a fundamental part of the MegaChem culture. We know that we have a responsibility to both our local community and the wider World. By actively encouraging our employees to support projects and charities we hope to play our part in making the World a better place. Events like this coffee morning allow us to demonstrate our commitment to be a caring and responsible employer and we are proud to be supporting our chosen charity for 2016, McMillan Cancer Support, in their efforts to support all who are affected by this disease.
